Cowboys’ Mike McCarthy Hoping For One Thing In NFL Draft
Nathan Ray Seebeck-USA TODAY Sports

Mike McCarthy and the Dallas Cowboys entered NFL free agency with a laundry list of areas needing attention, but unfortunately, they fell short in addressing them.

Despite Jerry Jones’ assurances of going all-in during the offseason, the team let go of key players, failed to secure contract extensions, and now finds itself with multiple gaps in the roster.

In response to these shortcomings, head coach Mike McCarthy has emphasized the urgent need to bolster the running backs department through the upcoming NFL Draft. This position stands out as perhaps the team’s most glaring deficiency at the moment.

“My God, I hope we can get one of these running backs. It would be great to add it to the room. But I don’t believe that these draft picks are just absolutely starters. I don’t succumb to an 11-man roster because it’s not the reality of how this thing works. I think the fact that we’re in a 17-game schedule, it’s even more exemplified. It’s going to take them all to get to where we want to go to.”

Disappointingly, the Cowboys displayed little interest in retaining Tony Pollard, who struggled to assume the role of primary back and ultimately departed to fill Derrick Henry’s shoes with the Tennessee Titans.

The addition of veteran journeyman Royce Freeman to the running backs roster, alongside Deuce Vaughn and Rico Dowdle, aims to address this gap to some extent.

While this year’s draft class lacks standout talent at the running back position, especially at the top of the rankings, there should still be viable options available for the Cowboys to consider in the later rounds.

It’s evident that the Dallas Cowboys have not significantly improved from their previous season, which is cause for concern, especially considering the disappointing outcome of the last campaign.

Speculation looms that Jerry Jones may be inclined to overhaul the team if they fail to perform well this season. Yet, the current trajectory doesn’t inspire much confidence in their ability to overcome hurdles and achieve better results.
