Doug Pederson is not happy with Jaguars' pre-snap penalties
Scott Galvin-USA TODAY Sports

Even at 8-5, which by all means is a successful season thus far, the Jacksonville Jaguars can't seem to get out of their own way, especially these last two weeks. They beat the Houston Texans two weeks ago, and it seemed like everything was heading back in the right direction.

But it wasn't. The Jaguars have since lost two in a row to teams they should have beaten, both with backup quarterbacks. Both teams put up a large amount of points, so the defense can take some blame as well; however, the offense hasn't been good, and it's supposed to be the better of the two.

The Jaguars are supposed to have one of the best offenses in the league based on the weapons they have. The run game hasn't been great, but Doug Pederson claims he can try other things to get it fixed. The passing game has been bad as a result of the run game, the offensive line hasn't been great and is banged up, and the offense, in general, just cannot get out of their own way.

The pre-snap penalties may be one of the biggest things wrong with this team. Pederson knows why, too.

"Quite honestly, they show up in practice during the week," Pederson said to reporters on Monday. "That's where it starts. I'm a big believer that you're going to play like you practice. When you don't have crisp practice during the week, sometimes those things can creep into a game. It gets magnified in a ballgame; everything matters. It's something that is a point of emphasis offensively.

"We pride ourselves on the silent count, being able to use that because yesterday, we did draw a couple of defensive offside penalties, which was great. I think one was missed late in the game on the touchdown pass, which was okay. Those are things that are concerning and alarming because those are things that are holding the offense back right now."

In a way, Pederson seems to be calling out his team for their bad practice habits. But, when you think about it, that just falls on him. According to The Football Database, the Jaguars have the fourth most false start penalties in the league with 22. They have the seventh-most delay-of-game penalties as well.

If that doesn't tell you everything you need to know about this team and not getting the job done before the ball is snapped, then I don't know what else does. They have an issue, and it literally just comes down to discipline, paying attention, and coaching.
