Daniil Medvedev downs Felix Auger-Aliassime to reach Australian Open fourth round
Abaca Press

Daniil Medvedev advanced to the last 16 of the Australian Open after defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime in straight sets.

In contrast to his four-hour battle against Emil Ruusuvuori two nights prior, Medvedev raced through his third round match, clinching a 6-3, 6-4, 6-3 victory after two hours and 9 minutes.

With the win, the Russian improved to 7-0 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series.

‘’It was tough for me, especially after the last match I had,” Medvedev said during his on-court interview.

“It felt tough when I ran so I tried to give him a tough shot so he couldn’t run me so much… ‘’

‘’I wasn’t feeling 100 per cent but I tried to make my best work possible.’’

Medvedev has a chance of returning to world No. 1 should he lift the trophy next Sunday.

The third seed will take on Portugal’s Nuno Borges, who upset No. 13 seed Grigor Dimitrov in his third round match, in the next round on Monday.

‘’I saw the first set today and he was playing well,” Medvedev said of his next opponent.

“And to beat Grigor who was on fire lately is a big achievement and I am looking forward [to it].

‘’Hopefully I can show you guys my best level.’’
